                                                                                ***
Before awakening there is a moment that cannot be classified as full alertness nor can be called a dream. The experience of consciousness while idly interfering with the mind and dispeling the imaginary concoctions of the mind is almost cathartic in a small fraction of a second. That time parable can last so long that one can lose all track of the very short time period that has actually passed. It seemed to me that I always felt protected, calm, weightless, almost like a fetus floating in amniotic fluid, without thoughts, fears, existential threats, without feeling the passing of time. What a fantastic delusion of the drowsy mind; my subconscious acting in a supplementing and protecting way against the contents of consciousness. However, this absolute peace of the soul and body was disturbed by the impulses of reality. I remembered myself and the traumatic event and tried to open my eyes. The brilliance spilling through the huge window awakened me. I wasn’t in my room. The whiteness of the surrounding walls blinded my pupils because it is was dispersing the sun’s rays in a wonderful way, transforming them into imposing mirrors of reflecting light.

I could make out the figure of an unknown woman in her late thirties. She looked at me with a warm, simple-hearted smile. Then she approached me curiously, dressed in a drifty, decent dress, spreading charming circles of lightweight fabric with every movement and coloring the air with the scent of her skin. I noticed the freckles on her pale face, dotted with tiny blue capillaries under the eyes, red, curly hair, whose abundance was hardly tamed, and a small but very muscular body with a discreet butterfly tattoo on the side of her neck, just visible under her tied hair. Outlined, proportional eyebrows raised in incredibly symmetrical arches above her hollowed green eyes. It is a most striking green I've ever seen in the eyes of ordinary mortals, a green which was contending the pupils it belongs to and encompassed those who looked at her. Dark circles under her eyes softened the sparkling shimmer of the harmonious sclera that threatened to swallow the words and thoughts of those who would look into them long enough. This beautiful woman was certainly one of those rare people whose very soul and her depths can be glimpsed behind their eyes.

„Chiara, you will be fine“, she suddenly broke the silence with a steady voice, from which emanated an unobtrusive authority imbued with tenderness and understanding.

"Am I in a hospital?" I asked and at the same time realized that there were no obvious indicators of that institution around me. I was breathing normally, wasn’t on infusion, wasn’t lying in a hospital bed, nor did my body have visible injuries caused by the fall. The room in which I found myself with this mystical woman was filled with light and freshness of spring days. The air filled my chest with energy and a barely noticeable hint of the smell of pine forest and sea. Hospital rooms don’t smell like that. I could clearly remember, the last time I found myself in one of them, the tickling in my nostrils caused by the harsh disinfectant, a fresh, just peeled orange in the hands of an exhausted old woman and the unpleasant musty odor the air-conditioner injected into the room together with the circulating air ‒ the mixed aroma of a basement kitchen and canteen.

„No, you are not in a hospital now. If you want this conversation to make any sense, don’t be tied to a time and place. I will explain everything to you. “ She smiled at me and shot me a look filled with compassion and love. Her gentleness made me shake of the attitude I wanted to have toward her, the one I generally have toward strangers. Full of distrust, I spoke to her without answering her smile and not showing the benevolence that was rising in me.

„Who are you? Am I in. .. a rehabilitation center? You ... must know that I tried to take my life? If you are one of the psychiatrists who are trying to help me, I would like to be left alone. “ I warily looked around the bright room. My emotions were mixed, confused, undefined in terms of sensitivity of sadness or happiness, as ubiquitous as the clear past but by no means a current state of mind. It seemed as if I still wasn’t fully awake. It made me doubt that I was influenced by strong psychogenic substances, which consequently made my senses hypersensitive and drowsy at the same time.

„It's okay to feel that way“, she said composedly, took a step toward me and held out her hand. She gently put her warm fingers on my bony shoulder, her soft, meaty fingertips just brushing against my skin before she gently rested her palm.

„I didn’t tell you how I feel. You probably are a shrink ... They always say that sentence ‒ it's okay to feel that way. With all due respect to you and your profession, you really don’t know how I feel.“

„I would like to know“, she insisted.

„Oh, why is it so bright in here? What is this room? Will you tell me where I am?“ I covered my eyes with my hands, refusing to get used to the endless shimmering white beams that were deftly, like an intruder, finding their way to every part of my pupils and protruding directly to my mind filled with darkness.

„I will, Chiara. I'll tell you where you are, but now isn’t the time for that.“ She smiled and gestured for me to stand up and follow her.

We walked down the long corridor. As I looked ahead, it seemed to me that I somehow know this place. It wasn’t congruent with the room we just emerged. Albeit my perception, dimmed with confusion, currently wasn’t sharp, I could have sworn that the room from which I just came out belongs to an entirely different object, if not another place and time. There was nothing spectacular here except the high walls built of carved white stone and a narrow passage towards the end of the building that led to a large door behind which I could glimpse daylight. Just before the exit, I glanced on the floor under my feet. My attention was drawn by a pleasant feeling on the soles of my feet. I was walking barefoot on the same stone from which the walls and ceiling were made. But I didn’t have time to react and ask one more question in a row, with which I wanted to rationally explain what is happening to me. We were already at the exit. Although I expected to see what I left behind outside, a hungry and brutal civilization, an urban crowd grabbing to their destinations through the streets of the big city, repeating the ritual of living through the daily activities that fulfill their petty human lives, a shocking scene greeted me at the other side of the large door. We were at the top of a medieval citadel encircled by the dark blue sea, the far horizon gradually curving in a slight semicircle at the very end. A strong gust of wind tossed my hair in my face and slowed me down while walking out of the fortification. Walking speechless after this unusual woman, I edged around this beautiful stone building until we reached the point where the trail descends and runs outside the fortress. I held myself against a tree on the edge of the track, scared by the height and a sudden dizziness. After a ten minute walk through the rocks and various crags of the immense beauty that stretched all around us, we stepped on the slope of a pine copse. Each tree was characterized by a particular exquisite posture. There was something inexplicably touching in this palette of the colors of nature that were alternating with the movement of the sun to the west. From the dark green birthplace of pristine conifers, I saw a beautiful vista of the blue cove. I thought we will never stop walking, but she stopped in front of a big, fallen bark. Overgrown with weeds and covered with moss, it looked like a good place to rest. She turned to me and offered me a seat. I complied, while accumulating incoherent questions in my mind, ensnared by the failure of my brain to separate the rational from the imaginary and with simple logic identify the reasons and circumstances of my presence at this place. As much as I tried to find a acceptable explanation, the answer eluded me and everything was opaque. She sat down next to me and sighed deeply.

„Look around. Nature reduces the restless of the soul.“

I lifted my eyes and embraced the landscape that spread all around me. She was right. The tableau was wonderful. It was serene and the air was filled with the breathing of the forest and rhythmic breaking of waves on the shore.

„I’ve been thinking a lot while we walked. I thought the most logical explanation for all this is that the water, after I fell into the river, unconscious, carried me a few hundred kilometers to the estuary, where you found me and put me in that room to recover... but now... I'm not sure what to believe. Where are we? Who are you?“, I spoke up, deep inside afraid of the answer, should it have nothing similar to my assumption.

She looked at me and smiled.

„You like the place I brought you to? As a child you loved the sea and found deep joy in it.“

„It's very nice. How do you know what I loved as a child? Do you know that I almost died? Now I'm sitting here with you on the slope of this dense forest and endless blue that soothes my pupils. Unbelievable! I am almost happy that I didn’t... you know... when I tried to kill myself... I nevertheless didn’t...“, I couldn’t enunciate my thoughts about the possible tragic outcome of my jump.

„No. You didn’t die“, she finished instead of me and added: „Death does not exist. At least not in the way most people imagine her. If you take away the meaning that we give her, she can no longer be the entity we think she is.“

„I don’t understand. Something nonetheless happened when I jumped from the bridge into the river... I do not feel the same. I'm really confused. How can you know that death doesn’t exist?“, I repeated inquisitively.

„The human race has no proof of death“, she confidently expressed a fact that defied common sense.

„That claim is absurd! Of course there is evidence of death!“

„You mean, the medical evidence that the body no longer meets its purpose?“

„It can be phrased like that, yes.“ I nodded.

„Before you were born, long before your body was conceived, you didn’t exist. The absence of existence is the absence of life. The absence of life, a clear indication of death. By that logic, you were already dead. Even if you die, it will not be the first time, and you could get used to resurrection, re-birth“, she said, nodding and gazing at the open sea.

„I can’t get used to that thought. It is too metaphysical.“…

An Ocean in The Eye - novel by Daniella Knez

An Ocean in the Eye is a story about a young woman; Chiara comes out of coma after surviving a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide and wakes up in an unfamiliar room where a mysterious red-haired foreign woman welcomes her. That moment is the beginning of her extraordinary spiritual adventure through fascinating landscapes of faraway lands, different time periods and cultures. Surrounded by strangers, she has no alternative but to follow the wise foreigner Maya on a faraway journey through an uncertain and unprecedented life experience. On that extraordinary adventure, in which she engages against her will to some extent, Chiara meets some of the most important historical figures who have shaped the history of civilization and were a key link for the general progress of mankind. Maya’s mission is to restore Chiara’s faith in people, love, meaning of life and God.

The first of many trips brings her to the coast of the Arabian Sea, far into India, into the thirties of the twentieth century. While acquainting with the beautiful landscapes of the exotic Hindu nation, she meets the great leader and father of the nation - Gandhi and his modest wife Kasturba. Through unusual events, contrived stories within the story and long conversations with this wise man, Chiara starts to perceive the world, people and faith in a very different way, for the first time opening her inner eye to the essence of life. The plot is quick due to the allegorical style of the narrator, which follows the main character on her strange spiritual cognitions with the same intensity as the readers. The novel is full of puns, contemplations, subtle conveyances of impressions and feelings, poetry and a cogency that miraculously flow through a rich form of storytelling, and the book itself, by its form, represents complete expressive freedom.

She travels from India to Nepal, to the time before Christ. There she sees life and people she never could have imagined. She personally relates to the story of a beautiful girl, Kame, and guided by her encouragement meets the great teacher, Buddha. After understanding the history, culture and life stories of people from a small village located in the valleys of Nepal and speaking with great Siddhartha, Ciara and Maya go to Europe, namely to Switzerland, to the home of the great psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. She attends one of the most fascinating dinners ever arranged in her honor, where Tesla and Einstein are among the guests. While conversing with them, Ciara undertakes a personal transfiguration and feels a strong yearning to return to her old life, reckoning that it is indeed worth of every new trial. The plot is full of tension also due to the fact that during the journey, the heroine doesn’t really know what happened to her, where she is or who is Maya, the woman who leads her to all those unusual places and people. Perplexed, elated, scared, astonished, Chiara is trying, more than ever, to recover her life and figure out what are Maya’s hidden objectives and whose is the inexplicable male voice that appears from time to time followed with a strong light and more than mysterious questions and wishes addressed to the confused heroine, caught up at the intersection of centuries, millennia, people and cultures around the world.
One episode takes place in former Judea, on the banks of River Jordan near Jerusalem, where she meets Jesus of Nazareth. Will he give her the answers she is vehemently yearning for? Will he dispel her doubts? Will she find out what is actually happening? All that is left to the readers to figure out. We are convinced that the readers will be, before they even realize, drawn into a very interesting, tense and uncertain adventure that will effect their own personal transformation after reading this unusual novel, since this rare and unusual book deals with the life of the soul and its relationship to spirituality and everyday life.
Daniella Knez draws her profound insights from the heritage of world religions and the relationship of modern man toward them, the storytelling illustrating the deep longing for the true awakening of man and his virtues and spirit which have been ignored, and aiming at identifying and enabling the essential good as man’s only truth to which he always must return and be guided by it. The phenomenal dissolving of time, typical for the stream of consciousness and narrative that follows events in different times and locations, makes the story far more interesting and mysterious. The author in a sophisticated way intensifies the richness of narrative with the ideas of great masterminds, poets of Romanticism and founders of modern psychology and anthropology. Danijela is neither a philosopher nor a theologian, or psychologist, her conceptions elude definition. Her book An Ocean in the Eye, with its lexically luxuriant, wise and friendly approach towards a modern (a)moral man, throws in our face a comprehensive ocean of spirituality which even the toughest souls  will not be able to resist. This is a book that will surely compel atheists ‒ even the most stubborn who defend atheism with science ‒ to reconsider their determination.

The novel intends to convey a powerful message of hope, to unravel the religious meaning of humanity and to compel readers to rouse their personal spirituality and morality as a priority in human existence. It is unique for its ambiguously comprehensible philosophical perspectives that unconstrained flow throughout the narrative. An Ocean in the Eye is not a book in the usual sense, it is rather a spiritual journey that a man undertakes and that is worth more than any psychotherapy. Danijela teaches us how to nurture our soul, which is usually neglected, symptomatically emerging in obsessions, coercion, violence and addiction. An Ocean in the Eye is an inexhaustible source of insight on the position of man and the state of things today and it offers the reader an extraordinary deep satisfaction.

THE PART FROM THE BOOK by Danijela Knez© - FUTURE, FORGIVE THEM PRESENT

Oh God, raise me from the mud. My body heads along and and stumbles, and my soul is still lingering on the cobblestones. Lo, my legs are rushing and pulling me ahead, but my soul is tired and lies half-dead there where it witnessed the horror. My heart is beating and my blood is rushing to my cheeks, and I start blushing and look healthy, but my conscious is dying from a vicious disease called disappointment. Oh, dear people, you who suffer and who are persecuted, let me in your flock; God's flock of those who suffer, so that we all may be lambs for sacrifices, may we all serve for evil's wrath and good's comfort.

I can't go on any longer. All that remains is a lie that I, too belong to the living. A man does not live until a rhytmic melody of a heart beats in him, he doesn't live until the very last breath, he is alive as long as he lives and while the spirit in him is the embodiment of God's creation of life. Nobody dies only once. We die every time we lose someone we love. God, can you count how many times I have died?

And you, Matthew, the one I love, you are nothing else but me. I will break you, just as every woman breaks a man, shamelessly and relentlessly. I promise you, Matthew. Just wait until I have enough courage so that my body can afford you, just as you last in my spirit for years...When I take back a part of me, I will be happy and calm. I am not that way because you, the one I love, are nothing else but me. Therefore, I recognized your nobility, that is why I feel your fear, that is why I am afraid of your anger, that is why I glorify your love, do you know...therefore, I know who you are, Matthew, because you, the one I love, are nothing else but me. I must learn that even when I give my all, I give nothing. A triumph over your love is actually planting of understanding, a planted thought. While you are led with that thought, it will be quite easy for me to mold it. While I mold your emotions, and impose erotic heat of my heart, and illusory occasional coldness of my spirit, while in front of you, I will keep you under my feet until then. After all, somebody is always keeping someone else under his or her feet. I love you so much, and long for you, but I don't believe I will be able to stay by your side if you want me to, one day. I have a feling that I will soon leave your presence Matthew, too...and I still haven't tasted you, I haven't drank anything from your lips. I will leave with a wish in my heart always to return, again and again, what a terrible felling of being worthless. What a capricious, liberal fact that is that I need freedom, but I will die for the one who give it to me. A conviction that everything will pass, without any conciousness about the fact that nothing is lost forever because of simple reason, which says that everything what happens shapes my spirit for the time yet to come. Maybe due to being thwarted by Sergey I will suffer a loss from you, guided by a muffle instinct, and under pressure from former knowledge. I will stay alone, living in conviction that one more of my romantic relationships is broken and that I lost a precious being. I won't be able to recognize a deception of my own mind. Those who disappointed me and hurt me, instead of being in past, just where they belong, will actually rejoice through my character, which is changed thanks to them. They will rejoice for a long, long time into the future.

Love is awareness of other being's existence, of its importance. Perception of aesthetic phenomenon in various spheres, whether it is visual or subjective beauty, it is not perfect, but as long as it is inspired by wishes, it is supported by faith in its uniqueness and probably one that is never repeated. A part of my being could swear to love Sergey, but that is not love which causes pain and suffering; or maybe it is, because all that I have ever seen with him, was nothing else but pain. Therefore, if you ever give yourself to me, never do it totally. Hide, run away, wander off, make me suffer because of you, just don't let me grow weary of you. You are nothing but a temptation. You are a discord in my consciousness, a uniqueness of distance of my limits, abyss of my perditions. You are passion, hatred, tranquility, hunger, thirst. You poisoned me, you are my sickness, cure, weakness and strength...all contradictions of life are gathered in you, all the energy of existence. Oh, I feel so bad...no, I haven't lost everything, but how can I find comfort in it, when I recognized myself among the lost ones.
